We took the train -- the Hyderabad Express -- from Lonavala to Hyderabad; it left around 3:30 Saturday afternoon and arrived around 6 on Sunday morning.
It was quite a comfortable ride in a curtained off compartment for 4. One of the other riders helped us understand the system -- the meals, the hawkers, etc.
Hyderabad was our first introduction to Indian traffic.
We thought it was a bit crazy in Lonavala, but it was amazing here. A
video on YouTube
illustrates the traffic; the video absolutely is typical!
The Charminar gate in old Hyderabad.
This monument was built by Sultan Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah between 1591 and
1612. The top floor is a mosque
The remains of the Golconda Fort, about 10 km west of Hyderabad, date from the 16the century where
the Qutub Shahis ruled. This is the beautiful main gate with the window at the top where the queen showered the king with
flowers and huge doors with protrusions to discourage attacking elephants.
A meal in Hyderabad is worth noting. A wide variety of foods are placed on
a plate with a banana leaf. In the lower right is curd (a very mild yoghurt) to balance hot curries
and other foots.
