| Jerry and I traveled on June 8 from Durban
to Maputo. We went by "combi," the local informal system
of vans. We were warned that this is not the safest way to travel
(and we believe it!), but we had no alternative for travel on a Saturday.
Maputo lies on the Moçambique coast (see the map),
an 8-10 hour drive. The route took us up the coast in the province
of Kwa-Zulu-Natal. Then we headed through the Kingdom of
Swaziland. It was dark when we crossed the border into Moçambique. There were many complications to this trip -- to many
to detail here --, but when we got to Maputo, the combi driver found a
taxi and we transferred to our hotel.
The hotel was the Pensão Martin, a simple but very
adequate hotel used by Habitat for Humanity Moçambique with a good,
inexpensive restaurant where we enjoyed the wonderful seafood of the
Indian Ocean coast. |
