Getting to Inhaca
Home Up HfH-Mozambique Getting to Inhaca HfH - Inhaca

To reach Inhaca, we took the red powerboat on about a 1-hour ride.  Joining Jerry and me were Mónica and her daughter and several other tourists taking a day-trip to the island.

The water was choppy, and since the tide was low, we had to wade the last 150 m to reach the coast.  The warm Indian Ocean water and the gentle beach felt good. We were met by HFHM's Field Operations Manager, Bento Manhice.

On the island, our transportation was this tractor and a trailer equipped with benches, arranged by Bento.  During the day of traveling around the island, we saw only one other motorized vehicle.

Apparently, when tide is very high, much of the island is flooded.

At the end of the day, the tide was up, and the boat could dock.  We had a very comfortable ride back to Maputo.

We spent Monday walking around Maputo, a city with the real African flavor of cities to the north (except that it seems to work.)

Tuesday morning, we got on the Intercape bus headed for Johannesburg and made the relatively short trip to Nelspruit in South Africa where we could rent a car.
