Travels to Edoras, Middle Earth

A free day in Christchurch was available before flying back home.  These photos come from a trip to Mt. Sunday in New Zealand, providing a view of New Zealand's Southern Alps.  I and one other person joined a guide, traveling about 150 km to the southwest of Christchurch.  Mt. Sunday was the site on which the set of Edoras in the LOTR was constructed.

Looking up into the mountains from the sheep-filled Canterbury Plains.

View down the Rakai River gorge.

Looking across Lake Clearwater in the highlands.

Another view from Lake Clearwater.

Mt. Sunday, viewed from a nearby road, on which the set for Edoras was constructed.

This view has the same background as a photo from the movie that is found on the cover of a popular guidebook.

Meduseld, the hall of Theoden, king of the Rohan, was built on the rocks in the foreground.

This rock contains the only signs that we could find that anyone had ever been up here. The crew was required to restore everything to its original state, but they couldn't get the iron pin in the center out of the rock.
